What Is BC Bud?
BC Bud strains are the cannabis strains grown in British Columbia, and "BC Bud" is the name that ties them together. It is a regional label, the same way people talk about Champagne or Napa wine. You won't find one plant called BC Bud.
The name itself is older than most people guess. Before it meant weed, BC Bud was the name of a lager first sold in 1931, according to Leafly's history of BC Bud.
Where the BC Bud Name Came From
Leafly traces BC's growing culture back to the 1960s and 70s, when growers on the coast and in the Interior started selecting and crossing their own plants.
The real boom came in the 1990s. Indoor rooms and hydroponic setups let BC growers produce dense, frosty flower all year, and the quality built a reputation that travelled well beyond the province.
Vancouver became the centre of that culture. The city's first 4/20 gathering was held in 1995, and BC Bud became shorthand for strong, well-grown flower.
Is There a Strain Called BC Bud?
No. Reputable strain databases don't list a single strain named BC Bud. Some seed sellers sell their own crosses under that name, but there is no one agreed BC Bud genetics.
BC Big Bud is a different strain altogether, a sativa-leaning relative of the old Big Bud line. When someone searches for the "BC Bud strain", they almost always mean the classics below.
The BC Bud Strains That Made the Name
Pink Kush
Pink Kush is the strain many Canadians picture when they hear BC Bud, and Leafly ranks it among the strains its Canadian readers search for most. It is a close relative of OG Kush, and BC clone houses spread it across the province until it became a staple.
Ours is an indica at 28% THC with a sweet, floral nose, vanilla and a candy-like finish. It is commonly picked for the evening, with a relaxed, euphoric and sleepy feel.
Get it as Pink Kush AAAA flower from $19.99 for 3.5g, as smalls, pre-rolls, or live rosin.
Death Bubba
Death Bubba is a cross of Death Star and Bubba Kush, bred in Vancouver. It is known as a heavy indica and has long been a late-night favourite in BC.
Our Death Bubba AAAA is labelled 32% THC, with an earthy, musky nose, skunky diesel and a pine finish. Expect a heavy, relaxed and sleepy effect, so save it for when the day is done.
It also comes as smalls ($75 for 28g), pre-rolls and live rosin.
Island Sweet Skunk
Island Sweet Skunk is the sativa-leaning exception on this list: a Skunk line long grown on Vancouver Island and released by Federation Seed Company.
It smells of sweet grapefruit over classic skunk, and it is known for an energetic, upbeat, focused effect. We carry it as Island Sweet Skunk live rosin.
Rockstar
Rockstar, sometimes sold as BC Rockstar, is a Rock Bud and Sensi Star cross and a long-time favourite with BC growers. It is an indica with an earthy, spicy and skunky profile.
Ours is labelled 29% THC and comes as Rockstar smalls, $65 for a 28g bag.
God Bud and Romulan
Two more names you will hear in any BC Bud conversation. God Bud, a Hawaiian and Purple Skunk cross from the BC Bud Depot breeders, is one of the strains most closely tied to the province. Romulan is a heavy indica that is popular in BC and the Pacific Northwest.
Neither is on our shelf right now, but they belong in the story.
BC Favourites That Didn't Start in BC
Some strains are so common on BC menus that people assume they were bred here. Purple Kush is a well-known example: it comes from the Oakland area of California, a cross of Hindu Kush and Purple Afghani.
It still has a big following in BC, and you can try it as Purple Kush live rosin. Blueberry is another US-bred strain, from the American breeder DJ Short.
Is BC Bud Indica or Sativa?
Neither, because BC Bud is a region, not a strain. That said, most of the famous BC Bud strains lean indica: Pink Kush, Death Bubba, God Bud, Romulan and Rockstar all do.
Island Sweet Skunk is the main sativa-leaning one. If you want a daytime BC strain, start there. For evenings, the indicas are the classic pick, and our indica strains page lists every one in stock.
Why Is BC Bud Famous?
- Decades of breeding: BC growers have been selecting and crossing plants since the 1960s and 70s.
- Indoor know-how: the 1990s shift to indoor and hydroponic growing made dense, frosty flower possible all year.
- Reputation: the quality built a name that spread far beyond BC, and it stuck.
Is BC Bud good? Its reputation is for strong, well-cured, frosty flower. A name alone doesn't guarantee quality, so look at the grade, the THC on the label and how fresh it smells.
